best bedding for small animals!

This subject has been a topic of debate for a long time. So I'm going to give you my opinion.

Good Bedding for Small Animals:
There are two types of beddings we always recommend first and foremost to all adopters. Those two are Kiln Dried Pine and Aspen wood shavings. Both of these beddings are safe and the best at controlling ammonia. These beddings give pet owners the longest time between changes. Both of these last an average of 7-8 days between changes (depending on the number of animals in the cage).

These beddings are also cheap and usually easy to find. If you decide to use pine, just make sure it is kiln dried. If you aren't sure contact the manufacturer and find out to be safe!

Our preferred bedding to use is the tractor supply fine pine shavings These bags are huge and only cost $5.99 each!

Bad Bedding For Small Animals:
There are many beddings that are NOT appropriate for small animals for any reason. Here is a list of beddings you should never use for bedding.

- Cedar Shavings
- Clay Cat Litter
-Reptile Carpet
-Puppy Pee Pads
-Sand
-Small Stones
-Fabric
-Soil/Mulch

Contrary to Popular Belief:
While paper bedding and fleece are often used as bedding for small animals, I strongly recommend against both of these options. The main reason is because neither have the ability to control odor and ammonia levels build up very quickly. Fleece is also not absorbent. When animals urinate on it, it builds up over time as a film over the top. This means animals are constantly walking on their own urine. Even when placing an absorbent layer underneath some urine still stays on the top of the fleece, building up over time.

Anyone who decides to use either of these should understand that they need to be changed very often to keep animals healthy. Paper bedding should be changed every 2-3 days and fleece NEEDS to be changed every other day.

Here at Bleu Jay Exotics, the use of any beddings that are unsafe will result in making our health guarantee null and void.
