The Best Cages for Campbell Dwarf Hamsters!

1/21/2021

Unfortunately most cages on the market for hamsters are NOT APPROPRIATE for them. As fun as some of the pet store cages may look, most do not provide enough space or ventilation. Stay away from most petstore cages that are marketed for hamsters! Here you can find some other options that are appropriate for them!

Why glass tanks are the best option:

Glass cages are the most appropriate housing for dwarf hamsters! They provide plenty of floor space and can be filled with deep bedding for burrowing and nesting.

When deciding on what size to get always remember that dwarf hamsters need a friend or two! They do best living in small groups and not alone. For two dwarf hamsters, a 20 gallon long tank can be decorated nicely to accommodate their needs. But bigger is always better.

For two or more hamsters, I'd recommend looking for a 40 gallon breeder style tank. These are perfect and give your hamsters lots of space!. This size tank can house 3-4 dwarf hamsters comfortably.

Another option for housing that is becoming more and more popular are the IKEA Detolf cages. They provide a ton of space for these little guys! With this option, you will need to construct your own mesh lid as these are not made for hamsters.

WHere to get glass tanks and lids?

You can find most size glass tanks at your local Petco or Petsmart. Keep an eye on your local Petco for sales! Every few months Petco hosts a $1 per gallon glass tank sale. This is the perfect time to pick one up!

You can also try and find a used tank being given away or sold. Facebook marketplace and Craigslist are good places to look!

Why wire cages are no good for dwarf hamsters:

Wire cages are often not suitable for dwarf hamsters. Many do not offer enough floor space or the space for deep bedding. A lot feature plastic levels and tunnels which can pose safety risks for tiny hamsters. Bars also pose a large risk to little hamster feet. It's not uncommon for feet to get injured on cage bars.

Stay away from cages marketed for hamsters in pet stores!

Bin Cages

Bin cages are another acceptable option for dwarf hamster as long as they are constructed properly. 115 qt bins are a good size to start with. Wire windows need to be made of 1/4" hardware cloth and need to be tightly secured to the inside of the bin so there are no gaps. Wire windows can be place on the upper part of the long end of the bin or on the lid. Please contact me with questions on making a bin cage for your hamster.

If you have any questions about certain cages please feel free to reach out to us any time! We are happy to answer questions and give advice!
